June 2022, BBB received a Scam Tracker report regarding an impostor email from Geek Squad stating their antivirus protection had automatically renewed. The email appeared to be from Intuit QuickBooks and had an attached invoice for $382.00. The consumer called, was instructed to login to a desk support website to enter more information to pay the invoice, but the website was not working.
BBB found red flags with the invoice. According to USPS.com, 59307 Geovanny Loaf, Lewisburg, WV 24901, is not a valid address. Mail sent to the address was returned to the BBB as "Return to Sender - No Such Street - Unable to Forward." The purported email address, [email protected] is greek, not geek. Oftentimes, scams will have typos that are similar but different than the real company. The Geek Squad logo used on the invoice is different than the official Best Buy Geek Squad logo. Both use the colors black and orange, but the logo on the fake invoice has orange glasses above the words Geek Squad, and the real Best Buy Geek Squad logo is just the words Geek Squad within an orange and black oval.
